Sous Chef Jobs in Illinois
A Sous Chef, often considered as the right hand of the Executive Chef, plays a crucial role in managing kitchen operations in the culinary industry. The Sous Chef is responsible for developing menus, assisting in food preparation, maintaining kitchen inventory, supervising kitchen staff, and ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards. Furthermore, they collaborate closely with the Executive Chef in creating innovative recipes, designing special dishes, and managing kitchen budgets. They also step in and take charge of the kitchen in the absence of the Executive Chef.
Important skills for a Sous Chef include strong culinary abilities, leadership skills, creativity, time management and excellent communication skills. They should be familiar with kitchen health and safety regulations and often require food handling certification. Typical roles a person might hold before advancing to a Sous Chef position include Line Cook, Chef de Partie or Junior Sous Chef. Formal culinary education, such as a degree from a culinary institute, along with several years of practical experience in the kitchen, are normally required to be considered for a Sous Chef position.
