Education and Work Experience:

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Two (2) years of kitchen experience is required.

Scope of Position:

The Relief Cook will be responsible for preparing and cooking meals according to the menu plan, ensuring high standards of food quality, safety, and hygiene are maintained. They will act as the primary food distribution service for the program. Maintain an organized and sanitary environment. Implement and adhere to food codes and regulations to provide safe food and beverages to clients. Pick up food donations as needed for the kitchen service. The Relief Cook will work closely with the Kitchen Manager to provide meals in a timely manner.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

+ Must be courteous and respectful to teammates and donors.

+ Proven experience as a cook, preferably in a high-volume kitchen setting.

+ Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations.

+ Must be congenial and able to work with difficult individuals.

+ Basic Computer skills needed.

Licenses and Certifications and Qualifications:

+ Driver's License is required; and fewer than two (2) traffic infractions in the last year.

+ Food Handlers Permit.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Culinary school training or equivalent experience.

+ Experience working in a community shelter or non-profit organization.

+ Knowledge of nutrition and special dietary requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

+ Follows good cleaning techniques, food/ingredient storage, chemicals storage, & labeling products.

+ Maintain a clean and organized kitchen workspace.

+ Practices safety procedures, utilizes tools, equipment and protective equipment as needed; and informs Supervisor of any/all safety hazards, equipment failures, and needed repairs.

+ Apply food safety and hygiene regulations in kitchen, project site and/or preparations of To Go meals.

+ Maintains a professional appearance, demeanor, and attitude; follows all dress code standards.

+ Help with the receiving and proper storage of food deliveries.

+ Pick up food donations on assigned days and deliver items to kitchen or project site.

+ Prepare and cook meals according to the daily menu plan.

+ Ensure all meals are served on time and meet the dietary requirements of clients.

+ Assist in monitoring kitchen inventory & inform Kitchen Manager of shortages or supplies needed.

+ Work collaboratively with other staff & volunteers or a team, work independently as needed.

+ Provide guidance and support to volunteers assisting in the kitchen.

+ Communicate effectively with the Head Chef/Kitchen Manager regarding any kitchen issues.

+ Interact with clients respectfully and courteously.

+ Address any special dietary needs or requests as directed by the Head Chef/Kitchen Manager.

+ Report any kitchen equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the Head Chef/Kitchen Manager.

+ Adhere to all organization policies and procedures.

+ Participate in training sessions, meetings, and uphold all organizational policies and procedures.

+ Reports to work on time for posted schedule and maintains accurate time records.

+ Ability to be flexible with your work schedule, including weekends, holidays, emergencies if needed.

Physical Requirements:

+ Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.

+ Grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.

+ lift and carry up to 40 lbs.

+ Must be able to drive a motor vehicle.

Working Conditions:

+ Work in all types of weather conditions.

+ Work in kitchen with hot and sharp equipment without risk to personal safety.

+ Works on many projects at once with interruptions and noises from voices and equipment.

+ Comfort working in a kitchen environment with varying temperatures.

Miscellaneous:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code that includes professional dress which is appropriate to the work environment and reflects well on the organization.
