Title: SUBSTITUTE COOK

Reports to: Cafeteria Manager

Work Schedule: As Needed

Primary Job Function:

  • The Delaware Area Career Center Substitute Cook is responsible preparing and serving meals on a temporary, as needed basis while maintaining the highest standards to ensure quality service and customer satisfaction. This job description is a comprehensive list of essential functions. Essential functions are job duties a staff member must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent

  • Food production skills and the ability to use commercial kitchen equipment preferred

  • Ability to obtain a ServSafe License

Cook/Kitchen Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for consulting with the cafeteria manager for assignments and/or instructions
  • Responsible for the careful use of products and supplies to control costs and reduce waste
  • Responsible for advising the cafeteria manager when additional inventory is needed
  • Responsible for following the published menus
  • Responsible for using standardized recipes to maintain quality control
  • Responsible for monitoring production sheets and assisting other staff in meeting established schedules
  • Responsible for recommending menu modifications in response to customer requests
  • Responsible for preparing special meals for students with dietary needs
  • Responsible for setting up serving lines. This can include but is not limited to:
    • Attractive presentation of food
    • Replenishing supplies to maintain customer flow
    • Monitoring portion size to ensure compliance with district specifications
    • Providing substitute menu items as needed
    • Assisting with sale of food items using the cash register
  • Responsible for properly storing or disposing of leftover food
  • Responsible for helping the cafeteria manager account for all lunches
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records as requested. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Using cafeteria receipts to prepare bank deposits when directed
    • Making deposits when directed
    • Submitting daily records to the treasurer’s office as directed
    • Meeting all deadlines for required paperwork
  • Responsible for assisting with special events as directed
  • Responsible for assisting rental groups as directed. This includes securing the kitchen and storage areas as directed
  • Responsible for supporting the custodial staff with maintaining cleanliness of the cafeteria area including the commons and staff dining room

Safety & Security:

  • Responsible for following approved receiving and storage procedures to ensure food safety. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Assisting with the receipt of deliveries
    • Verifying delivery quantities
    • Reporting shortages, spoilage or inferior products
    • Organizing, storing, dating and rotating stock as directed
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all food preparation regulations such as hazard analysis critical control points and sanitation procedures
  • Responsible for monitoring kitchen safety. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Ensuring kitchen supplies and equipment are properly stored
    • Identifying maintenance needs
    • Notifying the cafeteria manager regarding equipment that needs attention
  • Responsible for documenting all injuries that require medical attention
  • Responsible for cleaning, sanitizing, and washing equipment and food preparation areas. This includes:
    • Work surfaces
    • Cooking equipment
    • Serving lines
    • Floors
  • Responsible for operating the fire suppression equipment when necessary
  • Responsible for helping prepare for fire, health and safety inspections

  • Responsible for watching for student behavior that may include a problem and reporting those concerns to the appropriate administrator. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Profanity

  • Responsible for wearing appropriate work attire and maintaining a neat appearance

  • Employees shall be expected to exercise reasonable care with respect to the safety of students and student property. Employees shall discharge their duties and responsibilities to students and property according to the applicable Laws, State guidelines and Board policies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local policies related to students
  • Knowledge of FERPA, IDEA and HIPPA
  • Knowledge of principles and methods of quantity food preparation, distribution and storage
  • Knowledge of institutional kitchen equipment and utensils
  • Knowledge of safe food handling practices and procedures in accordance with HACCP guidelines
  • Knowledge of cooking techniques, food preparation and ability to follow recipes
  • Knowledge of all DACC adopted software
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Skilled at effective verbal and written communication
  • Skilled in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Skilled in collaboration and decision-making, seeking consensus whenever possible
  • Skilled in conflict resolution
  • Skilled at developing rapport and interacting effectively with students and staff
  • Ability to operate a variety of cafeteria and kitchen equipment, utensils, measuring devices and machines
  • Ability to perform simple mathematic calculations, count money and make change
  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work with students to provide feedback, maintain an orderly atmosphere, and foster a safe and healthy school environment
  • Ability to handle behavioral and emotionally charged situations in a calm and effective manner

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
