TITLE OF VACANCY: Substitute Cook III

POSITION TYPE: Service

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

On an on-call, as needed basis prepares and serves meals to the students and staff on the WVSDB campus in accordance with WVDE Office of Child Nutrition Program regulations. The cook performs cooking and baking duties, following nutritionally sound menus, and may be assigned inventory, record keeping, computer input responsibilities. The cook may assume additional duties in the absence of the Cafeteria Manager. Coordinates, prepares, and serves special meals, as requested, by the Superintendent.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 - "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.
  • Follows established procedures and policies in carrying out assigned duties.
  • Observes safety precautions in carrying out assigned duties efficiently and productively.
  • Maintains positive public and employee relationships.
  • Participates in 18 hours minimum of Professional Development annually, including maintaining food handler's certification and ASL required sessions.
  • Revises/prepares recipes with healthy lifestyle guidelines in mind (lower sodium, fat content, sugar content, fiber, etc.) and advises supervisor of any issues that may arise.
  • Sets up cafeteria lines and serves meals on the line or family style as directed.
  • Prepares requisitions for food and supplies, orders equipment and repairs.
  • Assists with the storage and inventory of supplies and the preservation of perishable items.
  • Cleans kitchen and dining area, washing utensils, dishes, tables, and chairs plus sets up tables for each meal.
  • Annually reviews proper food handling procedures including sanitation methods, proper storage of perishables, holding temperatures for steam tables, etc.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8:

Cook II- means a person employed to interpret menus, to prepare and serve meals in a food service program of a school.

Cook III- means a person employed to prepare and serve meals, make reports, prepare requisitions for supplies, order equipment and repairs for a food service program of a school system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code 18A-2-5.
  • Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code 18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
  • Must acquire and maintain food handler's certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

  • The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies.
  • The staff member prepares food items in a tasty and an attractive manner using USDA standard recipes or oral instructions including regular and special diets.
  • The staff member maintains accurate records and provides reports on these records, as requested.
  • The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.

SALARY:

Hourly pay rate based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule, C Scale. Dependent on applicable years of experience and education level. Specific assignment is based upon student needs, enrollment, and departmental needs.

EVALUATION:

Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
