By iHire | March 20, 2020

Are you struggling with finding the right job fit? Are you ready to make a career move that better aligns with who you are and what you enjoy doing, but you’re not sure what move would be best for you? Do you truly know who you are – your strengths, personality traits, values, interests – to choose the right career path or career move for yourself? A personality career test can help you answer these types of questions.

What are career assessments?

We are all unique in how we show up in our day-to-day lives and at work. We also each possess a unique set of skills and gravitate toward different types of work. Popular career assessments are useful tools to support you in better understanding your personality type, the skills in which you naturally excel, and the types of positions in which you’ll likely find enjoyment and success.

There are several popular career assessments available. Many charge a fee to take the test or receive your results, while others are free to use. If you’re wondering whether or not a free personality career test is worth taking, they definitely can be, though some are better than others. The iHire team found the following three free career assessments to be some of the best available. Each can provide useful data and insights as you navigate your career choices.

1. Keirsey Temperament Sorter

The Keirsey Temperament Theory divides individuals into four temperaments: artisan, idealist, rational, and guardian. The Keirsey Temperament Sorter career quiz takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Once completed, you will need to enter your name and email address to gain access to the report that provides the temperament within which you fall. The report provides you with some key attributes of that temperament to highlight who you are and how you connect with other people.

As one of the most popular career assessments, Keirsey is used by all branches of the US military. It’s also been used by millions of people throughout the world and more than 75% of Fortune 500 companies.

2. 123 Career Aptitude Test

The 123 Career Aptitude Test provides you with a combination of Holland Codes, or six personality types, based on Dr. John Holland’s theory of careers and vocational choice. The six personality types include artistic, social, enterprising, realistic, investigative, and conventional.

After taking the 15-question quiz, you’ll be provided with a six-letter personality type that indicates the types of jobs that would be a good fit for you. As one of the most informative free career assessments available, your Holland Codes results will include a list of positions that you might want to consider based on your personality type.

3. CareerOneStop Skills Matcher Career Quiz

The US Department of Labor sponsors CareerOneStop. This free career quiz asks you to rate 40 key workplace skills. After completing the quiz, you’re provided with a list of careers that match your ratings. The career listing includes the career type, annual wage, education required, and the current outlook for that type of position.

When taking a personality career test, keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers. It’s generally advised to respond to questions with your first gut instinct and what fits the best for you and your natural state from day-to-day. Avoid responding based on what you think the “right” answer is.
