~~Thank you for your interest in us!
We have a great summer Business in the Heart Of Alaska and we are looking for a great person to join us!
All of our position earn tips as well and are scheduled for 40 hours a week and we offer on site housing. We are looking for a great person who loves to cook. We have a variety of people working with us from all over the united States and the world for our summer season.
WHAT WE DO:
My name is Marilyn Usibelli. I own and run Black Diamond Resort
Co. We have been in business since 1995 and continue to grow and improve
our operations each season. We have a fantastic place located 10 miles from
The Denali National Park Entrance. We have a very unique and fun business
and are looking for adventurous, motivated people to join our team. We hire
Approximately 70 people each summer. We have a 50 seat Restaurant, a 9 hole golf course, a horse drawn
Covered wagon ride, and guided ATV tours. We have a very exciting business
with a great working environment! If you are looking for a fun summer job, we are the right place!
HOW WE GOT STARTED:
In 1995 my sister and I each had $2500 and a bunch of Land. We decided to
build a driving range. With the help of our parents, the next year, we
opened 5 golf holes and we had an "on your honor can" to pay $12! The year
after that we purchased a building and we had no electricity or running water.... Can you believe that! The year after that we got electric, water, and opened our first restaurant with
a Coleman stove and an outside barbecue grill! Today, we have a beautiful
50 seat restaurant and we feature fresh Alaskan Fish as well as steaks, burgers, pastas, and fresh large salads! We love to grow our own herbs and search high and low for the Best available produce! We have a 9 hole golf course now, ATV tours, and Also a Draft Horse Drawn Covered Wagon Tour. Last season we had over 40000 people come through our doors! It has been an unbelievable adventure for us! We are still just a little family run business though which has it's benefits and of course its weaknesses.
OUR BIGGEST WEAKNESS:
Probably the biggest weakness is we Live and work in a very remote environment. What this means for us is that we have to work with what we have and sometimes this can be a challenge. It also has been a challenge for us to hire enough staff so that is generally
Where our hardships lye. One thing that I find challenging is that in addition to operating our business we provide a limited amount of housing. It can be difficult having people live and work together and the housing is not fancy by anyone’s standards. That is specifically why we look so hard to find Mature, motivated staff to work with us!
We have a very simple system where each person is assigned duties and then we
Basically expect it to happen. We check in on you a bit but we try to hire
People who have great talent, (and basically don't need to be monitored), are
Easy to work with and can work as a team. So far this has been very successful for us. We have So many jobs and we can often train our staff in many areas so the summer is full of variety and fun. We generally do not hire anyone for a specific position we are looking for multitalented people who are flexible, positive, and simply fun to be around. Is that you? If so please keep reading!
Because we are a seasonal business, we don't offer a lot of advancement. I hope this doesn't discourage you though. Almost all of the employees that have come through Black Diamond tell me how different and refreshing it was to work with us. No matter how experienced I think you can gain something wonderful from working for us. We do not offer bonuses. But we do have Incentives to do a great job and we have a lot of returning
Second, third, forth, fifth year staff to help with the transition for a new job and we have
With us being a seasonal business we pretty much just break even every year and all of our profits either go back into our business to fix, maintain, or improve things or we donate as much as we can, sometimes more than we can to local charities so even though we are not a high profit company I think we are a great company and our fantastic, talented staff is proud to work with us. Also even though our wages are not the highest we certainly provide a great environment and a lot of customers so our staff earns a good amount of tips and meets wonderful people from all over the world. This is not a career job and was never intended to be one just a fun summer job in a remote beautiful location. Other than the $15 (which includes rent, all utilities, limited food, Internet, free laundry, dish network, garbage, propane, water) a day there really are not a lot of other expenses for living in our camp and it can be very fun and pretty inexpensive too. In addition we do several fun events for our staff such as our annual Beginning of season social, 4th of July Parade and barbeque with fireworks, Christmas Party, Trip into Denali National Park, End of season party.
To some up what I have:
WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER:
In a Nut Shell:
-You have a lot of creative leeway to make the job fit your personality
-You are trusted as an individual and given respect
-We are always open to new suggestions to improve and try very hard to be a
Place you can make a positive difference
-a lot of our positions earn tips
-Housing is inexpensive, close to our business and a lot of The activities To do are free
-This is a position that is a lot of hard work but is very rewarding and Fun!
-Overtime is not required
Overtime is tough to predict. As a business owner I try very hard for there to be no overtime. However there is a need for it. It is very unpredictable. It is usually only available on a last minute basis when extra people book last minute or if someone can not come into work because they are not feeling well, things of that nature.
Overtime is only offered to our best employees who are hard working and looking out for what is best for the company. It is also usually a last minute thing so if you have a second job, or plans to go hiking, you are usually not available to take the overtime shift. Overtime is always based on what the business needs.
It is a tough call for someone who is looking to maximize your income when coming to the US because a second jobs income you can count on and overtime you can not count on.
There are some great places near us that hire second jobs in housekeeping and dish washing and laundry.
If you do get a second job we do not allow anyone to drive any vehicles for safety reasons so the only jobs that we offer to people who get second jobs are prep cook, dish washing, front desk, serving and landscaping.
I am mostly looking for people who want a wonderful fun experience and are not looking to work two jobs. We are not the right place to make a big amount of money but we are the right place to have a wonderful cultural experience.
After Work Benefits:
Some benefits we offer: Job performance incentives given throughout the
Season, inexpensive housing, free golf, mini
Golf, covered wagon rides, atv tours, beginning, mid and end of season party; also our
Employees get to go white water rafting for free, as well as
flight seeing, fishing, 4-wheeling, and other local activities. We offer gift
certificates for a wide range of things for good attendance, customer
service, and things of that nature. We are a completely non-smoking
WE NEED YOU!
We hire a multitude of positions and offer great flexibility in scheduling
and job opportunities. We do a lot of training with our staff and we have
both full and part time positions and look for individuals who are willing
to do whatever is necessary to give our guests an outstanding adventure!
Our jobs are challenging and require a great deal of energy and devotion.
We serve a fixed menu that has fresh Alaskan Seafood, Great Steaks, Gourmet
Burgers, and fun and exciting nightly specials. We have been listed in
Alaska's Best Magazine and Fromers as Alaska's best find for our restaurant.
We are a friendly place, and pride ourselves on providing the best
experience possible to all of our guest. We need self-motivated individuals
that have a high team player ethic and love people and adventure!
Black Diamond offers a cultural environment, not just for the J1 students but also for us as a business, other employees, and the community. We all benefit from this opportunity as people from all over the world come to live and work and travel like a local for a few months in Alaska. Working for us is a great opportunity to learning more about other cultures and perspectives and make lifelong friends!
OUR OPERATING DATES:
Our positions begin in early May and end September late September. We hire a limited
Amount of part time positions, and positions that start or end before these
Date. We have an open position and it ends Sep 18th.
We have an employee housing facility that is walking distance to work. It
is set back away from the daily operation so you have an area that is
private from the hustle and bustle of the business. Our facility consists
of 14 mobile homes that we rent each room for $15 per day
per person plus this includes all utilities and some supplies. These are single and double rooms that 1 to 2 person stays in. There are 2 to 4 people per mobile home and each are set
up differently. If you prefer to live alone our housing is not for you! If you do not think it will be nice enough for you we totally understand and you do not have to live in our housing to work for us. Part of what we have to offer is a great place to live and work with your co-workers that is inexpensive for the area. You can share a room with someone in the housing if you would like. Several of the rooms are very large and a couple or two to three friends could easily share one room if desired and we did
have a group of friends last season that shared even more. The cost is still the same. We are very flexible here. We have a nice common area with some additional activities
available and a place to simply hang out and relax after work. We offer housing for a good price. It is not mandatory for you to stay in our housing and we encourage people look for their own place if they have special requests or pets. We also offer places to camp or park campers or RV's and that is $6 per day for utilities and rent of the space. In addition to our onsite housing, there are also apartment rentals. These are much more expensive ($800 per month plus utilities) and are 3 miles from Black Diamond. We do not provide transportation to this facility so
you will need a car. If you are interested in this option please let me know
and I can give you more information. Rent and Utilities are deducted from your paycheck and are due at the first of the month. You can also pay it with cash or a check.
The housing is located very close and is walking distance but it is much
much nicer to have a car to get around Alaska in. Some people buy cheap cars if they
fly into Anchorage, some ride a bike to work, while others simply walk. You can also drive here from the lower 48 states and that is an adventure in itself! Believe it or not a lot of people drive and I have done it about 20 times and love it! There is transportation to Fairbanks occasionally and also to and from the park area every day. We are located 250 miles North of Anchorage or 110 miles South of Fairbanks. You can take the train or a van shuttle to Healy, Alaska to get to Black Diamond Resort Co.
Getting To Black Diamond Resort Co:
You can either drive to Healy, Alaska or fly. If you plan to drive please e-mail so that I can help you make your trip the best it can be. The majority of our staff will be flying.
There are a couple of things to think about when flying into Alaska.
The best airport for us to pick you up at is Fairbanks, Alaska. The airport code is FAI. This airport is only about a 1 and half hour drive for us and we can usually plan to pick up other things that we need in town. You should be able to get a ticket to Fairbanks for about $25 to $75 more than the Anchorage airport.
We can pick you up any day any time at this airport and if it is during the day we can take you to the social security office if you are a first time j1 student and need to apply for this. If you fly in in the evening we will need to take you back to Fairbanks another day to apply or you might be able to stay the night in Fairbanks. We charge $25 to pick you up in Fairbanks to help cover wages and gas and this will be deducted from your first check.
If you fly into Anchorage, that is a lot farther drive for us (500 miles round trip) and for you it is 5 hours from our place, a long drive after a long flight and you usually have to wait at the airport for several hours for the last employee to arrive.
If you fly into anchorage we will not be able to pick you up and there is a shuttle that can pick you up at the airport alaskashuttle and they will drive you right to Black Diamond. This is something you will need to arrange on your own and I think they charge $75.

We are located in Healy, Alaska right next to Denali National Park. We live
and work in one of the smallest towns you'll probably ever come to.
I think this is a very important thing to consider when deciding where to
work. Your happiness at a job is important and what you have available to
do when you are not working contributes to your experience at Black Diamond.
If you are a big city person or are looking for a large city American
experience, we are not the place for you. Our business is surrounded by
nature and there are so many things to do if you like the outdoors and what
it has to offer. There is a bank although we direct deposit paychecks
into any bank and there are ATM machines, there are no movie theaters but we
do offer TV, there are only a few bars in the area and one is
actually pretty good with live music several times a week, we are located
about 10 miles from the Denali Park area where there are a handful of shops,
cafes, and stores. You can get to this area all day and evening by our
shuttles that go every hour. There is one small grocery/liquor store, a
post office, a small community library, a small community gym, softball
field, and a few other small businesses. That is generally about it. Our
staff does get a chance to ride to Fairbanks occasionally which is a larger town.
Basically, you will be living and working in wildlife country! It is a
Wonderful and challenging experience if this is what you are looking for!
Please feel free to contact me and ask me any questions you might have. I
will wait to hear from you before sending any more information. I am really
interested in learning more about what you are looking for.
For me.... It is difficult to explain my low wage and to be honest hard for me. I wish so much that I was able to offer a better job for my awesome staff.
During your first year, I have to invest a great deal of money into training each person. I could cut costs here and not cross train but I do cross train because I feel like coming to work for Black Diamond is a once in a lifetime fun event and having the opportunity to do a variety of positions really helps you to have a great summer, learn more, and be challenged. It is very costly for me in a $ figure sort of way but the rewards of having a happy crew far outweigh the cost.
If you work for me and live in my housing, you are essentially making much more than the above listed wage because I supplement your income with housing. It costs much more than $15 a day to house and feed each person. So it is of course debatable but a rough number for me is that housing runs me at least $3 an hour per person. So your real wage is more like the above wage plus $3 per hour plus you do earn tips with us which brings your wage up at least another $ an hour.
Years ago I paid people more per hour and charged them there actual utilities and such and it really didn't work out because the higher the wage the more taxes you pay so at the end of the day it was not a good thing for my staff and people were so shocked at their utilities bills and got in fights with their roommates and such. It is very expensive in Alaska for power/propane/Internet/garbage.... It’s crazy to be honest!
When talking money...I feel very lucky when I get a returning employee and this is where I am open to $ negotiations. Second year staff can talk to me about a larger wage. I'm not very open to it in your first season. I feel it is important to be very clear and honest with you about what I have to offer. In our super short crazy season we strive to give each guest our 110% and as an employee you can only do that if you are happy with your job, living arrangement, and choice to come work for us for the season.
